WinXP was re-installed recently and the technician misspelled some of the
details listed in System Properties panel.

The General tab indicates:

a) System:
b) Registered to:
and
c) Computer:

Is it possible to edit the text following "Registered to:" ?

For your information, my machine is a home desk-top computer for my personal
use only.

According to the info under Computer Name my machine is listed as
'WORKGROUP'.
I am not sure if this should be changed to DOMAIN?
The 'Full computer name' is correct (my name), so no reason to edit.

With respect to the 'inactive' box referring to Computer description, I
checked for
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComputerDescriptions
but 'ComputerDescriptions' is definitely not listed in my registry.

I then entered "net config server /srvcomment:"computer description" in the
command box, pressed OK, a dos window popped up titled
C:WINDOWS\system32\net.exe
displaying the following text:
"The Server service is not started.
Is it OK to start it? (Y/N) [Y]:"
--
Is it safe to start this service and will it activate the box in order to
enter the Computer description?

Rgds,

Yes start the server service by opening a Run command and type in:
services.msc click [OK] and on the services Control Panel scroll down to
Server and make sure it is started Automatically.

Reboot your computer and see.
also Run this command:
msinfo32 click [Ok]
Does the details there correct?.
I will not be worried about the Computer description, I have Blank unless
you would like to identify it on Network connection but that either not
much as the computer name.

Hi Caterina

My computer is a home desktop standalone machine too. It also shows as
Workgroup -- that's correct.

I don't know why your Computer Description box is inactive, but I
changed mine as a test and it showed up under the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

and also in the same place under CurrentControlSet. I believe though if
you add the entry in ControlSet001 it will be copied automatically to
CurrentControlSet.

Hope this helps!
