System Process utilizing 80%+ system resources

Help. Just in the past day the System (not system idle)
process is using practically all CPU time. As a result
things are sloow. I've gone back two weeks using a
restore point but no change. I've scanned for viruses
using NAV and MCafee - nothing came up. I'm at a loss as
what to do next. Any one with any suggestions? TIA
 
Normally if this isn't a virus, this is driver or
hardware related, in many cases from a USB device. If
you have USB devices, try unplugging them and see if it
goes away. Have you changed anything at all, either
hardware or software, around the time this started
happening?
