system pegged at 100%

After unsuccessfully trying to install a wireless USB adapter, my system is
pegged at 100% cpu. One of the svchost processes is the culprit, if I
manually stop it, my system returns to normal. How can I find what is
running in this specific instance of svchost and how can i stop it from
starting at boot?
Everyting I reboot, svchost starts again. There are siz instances running
and I can only guess which one needs to be closed.
I have re-installed XP SP1, the monitor, graphics card and iTouch drivers.
Any ideas?

Try to install the device software again. Maybe a
successful install will cure it. If not, then try
uninstalling the device in the ADD/REMOVE if it is there,
and if it isn't there, then try uninstalling the device
from the device manager.

thanks, i removed the device that I was trying to install, A linksys 802.11b
usb adapter. I initially plugged it into a hub when the iinstalltion
completed, it complained that it needed to be on a powered usb port. So I
moved it and moved my wireeless mouse ..; the story just gets worse from
there. Even when I uninstalled the device, as soon as I plugged it back in,
the system, found the drivers. I tried updating the driver and that did not
work wither....

in looking at my event log, it seems as though the SSDP servicive starts and
stops and that is what is pegging the CPU.

The system, is 18 months old and it is time to rebuild it, so ... what a
pain

That is a likely one - it is looking for devices that use Universal Plug
and Play. Unless you have a device that *uses* UPnP - and the only
likely one is a router that needs it for Net Address translation (NAT),
then you can disable the SSDP *and* UPnP services in Control Panel -
Admin Tools - Services and not notice. I have them disabled as routine
