I've been given this database to convert to Access 2000. In the folder where
it resides is a file called SYSTEM.MDA

What is it and what do I do with it?

It's the early (e.g. Access 2) equivalent of what is now a workgroup
information (mdw) file.

So I can safely delete it since it wont be used by Access 2000?

It depends. Access 97 can use a system.mda file, so I imagine that Access
2000 also can. So, if the database is secured, then you could have problems
if you delete the system.mda file. However, you should be OK if it's not
secured.
