After starting up xp home, system locks up. When I go into windows task
manager, there are two processes both svchost.exe /system that is using 100%
of my cpu usage. This started about 4 days ago. Initially it only happened
when I turned on my modem for internet connection. Now after replacing the
modem, it is happeneing offline. Is there any way of identifying which
programs are using all the cpu memory?

This program from Microsoft will show you what processes are running under each
instance of svchost.

Process Explorer v11.13
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

What you should also be trying to narrow down is what's changed in the few days
since this problem first appeared. Event Viewer might be helpful in this regard.

Good luck

SP2 or SP3?

Download Process Explorer.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

It would be helpful if you could post the Command Line of the svchost
process generating the excessive CPU usage. In Process Explorer place
cursor on Process and select Properties, Image.

Hope this helps.
