system locking up when I put in a CD

New system.

I insert a CD and the mouse freezes and the keyboard does not respond
Tried it from desktop or while an browser was open. same thing. Seems
to play DVDs no prob, but Asus mobo CD and another data CDs choke it.
troubleshooting says drive is OK

please help
 
This happens to me too. Whenever I insert a CD while xp pro is running it
does the same thing. I tried having the CD in the drive and rebooting. It
worked until it started to read the CD then froze. I have a dual boot of xp
home and pro though and everything works fine in home.

It might be an autoplay issue.
What happens if you press and hold the Shift Key down when you insert
the CD (until it spins up and then a few seconds longer)?

Hi:

With the system running, I open the CD drawer and insert media. I
close the drawer.
The CD does not start by itself.
If I click on my Computer then click on the Cd drives icon, it
freezes.
If I Click on my Computer while holding ctrlt doesn't open my Computer
it locks up sooner.
If it is a DVD in the drive, there is no problem
