My computer was working fine until I got a message to upload the newest
version of Winamp (5.05) since there was found to be problems with older
versions.
"The vulnerability takes advantage of the Winamp Skin installer mechanism
coupled with a security hole within the Internet Explorer browser. To be
vulnerable, a user must navigate to a specifically crafted web page which
automatically installs a malicious Winamp Skin. (I never went to any webpage)
This skin launches an embedded Internet Explorer browser within the Skin
using a feature of the Winamp Modern Skin Engine. This malicious Winamp Skin
then uses the browser to launch a malicious application bundled within the
skin. There have been reports of this exploit in use on the web to
automatically install Adware or Spyware applications without the users
consent."
After I installed the new winamp...I went to the internet and pulled up any
page that I normally would be able to visit and it would appear and as I
would read the content on that page (ie www.canoe.ca) it simply dissapeared
(the text) and leaves me with the message you always get when the page is
unavailable. (They ask you to check your internet options and stuff.) Bye
the way I run Norton Firewall and Anti-Virus on my computer.
So after all this I decided well lets just re-format my drive (C) which I
promptly did.
I reinstalled XP Professional and all the updates (I thought) and
reinstalled my firewall etc. I ran my Virus scanner and nothing. Even the
updates for some of those worm removal tools would come back saying that it
found nothing on my computer. Then I tried to access the internet again...I
was able to pull up my homepage and then read some article, but 2 or 3 mins
later the same error occured. Similarly I got an error(no specific code or
message) after trying to listen to my music throught the Windows Media
player. It would play the song for 10-30 sec and then just hang and the song
was stuck ( skipping over and over on the same note) to the point that the
only thing I could do was to press the reset button to reboot my computer. I
could not even do Alt+Ctrl+Del. Now it restarts at will, whether it is 10
mins after the reboot or 1 min...and I can still not access the internet for
longer than 1 min at a time (after a reboot).
I had to use my computer through work to send this question.
Please help with some suggestions as too what I can try.
Much appreciated.
