System Information tool reports incorrect level of Physical memory

I have an Evesham PC running XP Home and fitted with 1Gb of RAM

When I run msinfo32.exe, the total physical memory is reported as
256MB

Anyone any ideas why this might be?

I have searched MS knowledge base in vain.

Does this PC have on-board (on the motherboard) video card? Did you
install a motherboard chipset driver? Have you tried a different
diagnostic utility (like Belarc Advisor?)
