system icons keep disappearing

I am using Vista Home Premium and for the past few months the system icons
keep disappearing from the taskbar. At first, it was just the volume control
but it has been getting progressively worse. Now, Volume, Network and Power
icons disappear repeatedly on a daily basis - often several times a day. In
the Start Menu Properties tab: Notification Area, all three checkboxes are
greyed out (disabled).
How do I fix this and stop it from happening again?
