Recently, my system hangs up often. This occurs most
frequently (but not always)when the pointer is being
moved around the right hand 1/3 of the screen.

Hi, Martine.

You haven't given us much info to go on. All I can think of is that you
probably need to update your mouse driver. Or your graphics driver. Or
both.

For more specific advice, it might help if you tell us the make and model of
your mouse. Also, does this happen with all programs, or just certain ones?
Does it happen with only your Desktop onscreen?

I have an IBM NetVista with an IBM scrolling mouse. The
problem happens anywhere ... in AOL, Excel, Word,
desktop, etc.

Thanks for your help!

Has it always happened? If not what did you install before it started. Mouse problems are usually video driver related (the video driver draws the mouse pointer).

It just began to happen lately (within a month or so). I
did get rid of a virus not too long ago and re-installed
some programs, etc.

Do you think my video driver needs to be fixed or re-
installed?

It caused by interactions. Long ago (over 10 years) my computer would freeze if I used a scrollbar in Word, but only every third time.

Go to windows update and see if it has a newer driver. Or go to device manager (type it in help) and see if you can roll back the driver. In Controil Panel - Display Properties - Settings - Advanced - Troubleshoot try to lower accelaration.

What happens after it hangs up.

When the system hangs up, nothing can be done. CTRL-ALT-
DEL does nothing. The mouse won't move the pointer. The
page that was visible when this happens just remains on
the screen.

The only option is to manually turn off the system and
turn it back on again.

Ah well. If it crashed (as opposed to hang) there would be error messages.

Do the driver thing.

In case it crashed check the event logs. Type it in help to see how.

Besides reinstalling mouse & video drivers, take out your memory sticks and
video card and give the contacts a good cleaning (rub clean w/ pencil
eraser) and reseat. While you're there, clean the heatsink and the fans,
and check the tops of the motherboard capacitors to see that all are flat
and none bulging out.
