Windows XP pro, service pack 1
CAUSE:
An installation of Turbo Tax 2004 froze the system; subsequently, user
prematurely shut off power by manually depressing power switch for five
seconds.

ISSUE:
Subsequent to Windows XP pro normal boot up, screen is blank with the
exception of desktop background (Bliss).
Icons, Start menu, etc. are no longer visible nor accessible on desktop.
Ctrl,Alt,Del ineffective. Unable to use programs.
Mouse moves, but mouse buttons are ineffective. Right click on desktop to
no avail.

SYMPTOMS:
Program not responding:
dllhost.exe

The application failed to initialize properly:
taskmng.exe (0XC0000142)

Boot to safe mode hangs at the following prompt for a few minutes before
continuing to safe mode screen:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\ALIAGP.sys

Boots to Safe Mode with the following banner:
(Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633:service pack 1)

ASSUMPTION:

ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

The Start menu does not appear when I press CTRL+ESC.
Perhaps the problem may center on the dllhost.exe not responding.
How may I disable dllhost.exe from the command prompt?
Yes, I meant taskmgr.exe
I appreciated your feedback, Mr. Vogel

Thanks Mr. Vogel,
I very much appreciate your cooperation. However, the matter remains
unresolved.
I worked my way around the issue by logging on in Safe Mode as an
adminstrator and added another user account. This new account enabled the
icons, start menu, programs, etc. to reappear. I then set up the new user
account as an adminstrator and changed the former account to restricted user.
For some reason, since converting the original account (admin.) to a
restricted user level, the desktop in both user accounts display normally
with all icons, etc. in view. Hmm??
Enjoy the balance of your day, Vogel. Thanks again.

Nel,

I read one of your posts incorrectly. I thought you couldn't get into Safe
Mode, I now see that it just takes a while.

Glad you got it worked out.

I would suggest that you update your antivirus software and run a full
system scan while logged in under the new administrator account.
