System hangs during startup

A while ago my Windows 2000 system started spontaneously
shutting down whilst in use. The situation then
deteriorated so that the system now hangs during start-up
at the point where the desk-top background has appeared,
but before the desktop icons appear.

I have tried all the stuff like trying to get task manager
(can't) and f8 (last known good setup) but none of it
works.

Advice desperately needed!

Many thanks in advance!

Jim

Thanks for your reply.

I have actually tried a virus scan. Because I couldn't get
Windows to start up properly I re-installed Windows 2000
(alongside the original installation, potentially giving a
dual-boot system)and loaded a virus scanner in this new
installation. This detected and fixed the following in a
number of files:

W97M/Titch
Java/Byte Verify

However, this had no effect on the original installation
of W2K, which still won't atart up.

How can I repair the original installation?

If your machine has suffered a number of virus hits then
you should consult anti-virus sites (e.g. www.trendmicro.com)
for details about the exact nature of the damage, and how
to fix it.

Ultimately it may be better for your to stick with your
new installation than to battle with a compromised
version of Win2000.
