System Freezing

Steve Paddock

I have been having problems over the last couple of days with the system
freezing. The symptoms are as follows. The mouse pointer freezes on the
screen and the system clock stops. This can last for anything between 2 and
20 seconds. On "unfreezing" the system clock reverts to normal time. Periods
of non-freezing can last from 10seconds to 20 minutes.

This happens in whatever applications I am using. After a freeze, all
internet connections are lost and can only be re-established by re-booting.

I have had no blue or black screens of death and no error messages have been
output/. No new hardware or software has been installed in the last few
weeks.

So far I have ruled out (as far as I can) any virus, particularly the
msblast worm. All 3 sticks of RAM have been removed and replaced
individually with no success. I have checked system devices in Control panel
and there are no conflicts. No errors are shown in System Information.
CHKDSK has been run on all partitions on both drives and no errors are
found. CPU temp is not a problem according to the utility supplied with the
mother board.

Anyone any ideas please.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Sounds to me like heat-related issues. Get yourself an application like
Motherboard monitor and configure it to match your chipset and watch for the
processor and case temps to see if they are too high. If so, I would
consider maximizing the airflow in your case by using round IDE cables (or
just flute the cables with electrical tape), get a good intake and perhaps
another outtake fan.
