'system file missing or corrupt' again!

Bob H

Hi,
I have just shutdown my win2k system so that I can unplug an old 56k
modem (it wasn't shown in device manager at the time), then switched
back on to boot into win2k, and here we go again.
'The systemced file is either missing or corrupt' etc etc.
I let win2k shutdown by itself, no forced shutdown, so why did this
happen? Its becomming a common occurence now, having to copy over a new
system file about once every 2/3 weeks.
The last time this happened, about 10 days ago, I did a backup of my
system stuff and also created an emergency repair disk, which tonight
proved it wasn't, because it wasn't bootable, and when I did get to the
A: drives folders, there was nothing I could run to make any repairs.
All there was/is on it was Autoexec.nt,config.nt and setup.log.

Thanks

Well thanks, but the motherboard has been in place for over 12 months
now, and this problem has only recently started to happen.

Can anyone tell me why the ERD is not bootable and cannot be used as an ERD?

Thanks

ERD's are not bootable
The following may help you to understand how to use an ERD

The ERD is used *after* booting the CD and selecting to repair a W2K
installation, from memory. It isn't, as you found out, bootable.

OK, thanks, but first I don't have a Promise controller, and secondly
how large is too large for the registry?
Also is the so called 'systemced' file which became corrupted the actaul
registry system file or part of? Out of interest, it became just over
12mb in size when I recieved the error message, but now it is just under
3mb.
Furthermore, I have a folder \winnt\r27 which has what appears to be
backup files of the system dated from about 3 weeks ago, and there the
system file is just under 4mb in size.

Thanks

Well it was enabled on both my HDD's, but have now unchecked it.
Is it better to have write cache enabled or not?
I have read the link about it causing data loss if windows does not shut
down correctly, but apart from that is there any benifit either way?

Thanks

OK, thanks. I have read something on/from a link about that.

Leave it disabled. If the system is shutdown before the cache is flushed to
the drive then the registry (and other) file corruption will result.
