system file corruption

Hi,
I am a clueless computer person and I'm having some problems with my laptop.
My driver doesn't work properly so I wanted to restore to an earlier point
when I didn't have any problems. However, every time I try I get a notice
that is saying : system file corrupt OS (C and I don't know what to do or
how to fix it. Anybody who has a tip ?

Hi,

Click start and type CMD. Right click the entry in the start menu and use
'run as administrator'. From the prompt, run "sfc /scannow". This tool will
check the system file set and replace any corrupt ones with a backup.

What driver doesn't work properly? If a particular driver isn't working
properly what tells you it isn't?

Have you tried replacing the driver for the particular device? What are you
seeing on your screen in Windows?

What are y ou doing when you get that error message? Are you actually
running system restore?

How are you running SR?

My computer was unable to do error checking (chkdsk) and errors began to
accumulate. System restore did not go back far enough to restore this
function. System File Check identified a corrupt system file "autochk.exe"
that sfc was unable to repair. Instead of doing a clean install, I was able
to do an Upgrade Install that preserved my programs, devices, settings, etc.
(see John Barnett Windows MVP). I wanted to replace my corrupt system file
with a good one from the Vista Install DVD without having to do a complete
install, but was unable to do this until now. From multiple sources
including contributors on Vista Communities, Windows IT Pro, How-To Geek, and
Vistax64 Forum, I have put together a tutorial on how to access files from
your Vista Install DVD that you can use to replace corrupt files in your OS.
