System Event 52

J

Johannes Kehrer

Hello All,
I got the event 52 in the System Event Log.
The additional information is:
Event ID: 52
User: N/A
Source: Disk

The message is (translated from German): "The device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 will
fail. Bakup your data and exchange your harddisk. A failure is immininet".

When I look in the documentation for Windows 2000 it says that Event 52 is
caused by the Terminal Server.

But obviously this is not the case here.

Does anybody know which program causes this event? How is it determined that
the harddisk will fail soon?

Kind regards,
Johannes

Event IDs are not unique, but are specific to the source providing the alert. This alert is coming from S.M.A.R.T., "Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology", which checks disk health, and is usually a very good predictor of drive problems. Hard drives are pretty cheap, just replace it while you can still copy the data off it. If the drive is under warrantee, contact the manufacturer. In the meantime, I advise not using the computer at all unless you can afford to lose all the data on it.
