System Beeps Once- But No Video!

Q

QZ

I never had a system, which I built, fail to work perfectly; well, this is
the first.

I have a P4P800S-X (S478) (AMI BIOS), Celeron 2.53, Radeon 9250 (agp 8x),
Antec TP-II
380, Corsair VS PC3200 512MB (one module).

I have one beep, but no video. I re-seated the monitor cable. (The card seem
seated well, if not it would beep 8x, anyway.)

According to the AMI beep codes, one *short* beep is a DRAM Refresh Failure.
But some lists also show a *long* beep as a successful POST. The manual has
no list.

Indeed my P4C800-E Dlx. beeps once with AMI BIOS. I think it is the same
type of beep, but I am not sure.

Can it be a considered a 'Successful Post', yet have no video?

I am trying to think of what order to test things out. Maybe try the memory
in the other slot, then try the memory and video card in the P4C.
I have an old PCI video card, so I might be able to get in the BIOS, if that
helps.

What order do you suggest?

According to some people it could even be the mb, CPU, or PSU; but wouldn't
there be other or no beeps, if those were problems?

Now, I just found here it says 'one beep, no video' as a memory error.
<http://www.pctechnology.gr/vbull/vb/showthread.php?t=10858>
I am wondering if this is definitive, seeing as mb makers apparently are
customizing these codes somewhat.

Thanks,
QZ

reset the Cmos to defaults or change the memory timings.

A successful post beep is one very short 'beep

According to this other list, a long beep is good and short beep is a memory
error.
<http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/amibeep.htm>

I had asked, is it possible for a 'successful post' beep to occur while
there is no video?

How can I change the memory timings when I can't get in the BIOS?
(If a PCI card works, then it really means the AGP card or slot is at fault)

The mb while running a 533 FSB CPU runs memory at 333, not 400 (I have the
latter)

But, I read that the SPD has an alternate setting, so people
have this combo working fine. And the vendor that sold me all of the parts
are very reliable, and confirmed that all parts were compatible

Is there really any point to clearing the CMOS, on a new build?
I can try it, though.

Thanks for the quick response,
QZ

The manual says, in order to clear the CMOS, I should change the position of
the CMOS jumper. Doesn't this accomplish the same thing?

Q

I should add, that it says to leave the jumper in place for 'about 5 to 10
seconds', then switch it back.

What happens if you remove the monitor cable whilst the monitor is
switched on? Do you get the 'No signal' box appear?

I don't think that is a good idea.
When I turn on the LCD monitor it says 'No Signal', then the PC is turn on,
and there is no change.
I don't see what you are getting at.

Can you test with known good video card? Or test the 9250 in another
system. I assume this does not have onboard graphics?

Does that version of the 9250 have DVI out as well as SVGA?
Try the SVGA out to a CRT monitor?

Just trying to determine if the monitor was a working one. You hadn't
said. As you get a 'No Signal' message then at least you know the
monitor is ok and that some kind of signal is getting from the video
card to the monitor.

Yes, the LCD is working fine with my PC, not the new PC.

Yes, it has DVI, but I am actually using VGA to my LCD, because my parent's
LCD only has VGA.

Yes, I have a 9600XT on my PC.
This new one for my folks has no onboard video.

this is correct

I cleared CMOS to no avail.

Well, now I listened to the beeping again, as I can push reset and listen to
it a few times. I am hearing two connected short beeps, like 'beep-eep'.
(Not 'beep' or 'beeeep')
Two short beeps is 'memory parity error'. Note: 'A memory parity error has
occurred in the first 64k of RAM. The RAM IC is probably bad.'

Does this clearly mean the memory is bad?
Is it possible the mb slot is bad instead or in addition?
(I don't think it is the video at all.)

I wonder if I should try the second memory slot, or maybe go right to
putting other memory in slot 2, and new memory in existing PC?
I want to be efficient, as it really isn't good taking parts in and out.

I am getting frustrated. I am going like a yo-yo connecting and
re-connecting the two PCs to one LCD, cable modem, etc., and I haven't even
changed a part yet.
If this continues, maybe it is best to give them the PC, and shuttle the
parts back and forth, as they live very close.

One more thing, could this be a memory setting error?
The 533 FSB CPU needs memory running at 333; I have 400, but a person with
this combo, said the SPD would downclock automatically. Vendor said all
parts are compatible. Obviously, I can't get in the BIOS to set anything.

Any jumpers to raise, like memory voltage?
A quick look at the manual and I don't see any, but I'll look again.

If you remove the memory, should give error for 'no memory'. You could
test new video card in your system with a Win98 startup diskette, should
POST and go to A:>
