System Audio, hardware problem

Yesterday (9th May 2007) I installed some security updates for Windows XP on
my Dell M1710. Upon rebooting the system, however, there were things that
weren't right; both on the hardware and software-sides.

Now I cannot use the integrated controls on the chassis itself for the
volume on the keyboard's shortcuts either, and the Volume Control icon
refuses to display, even thought the appropriate tick box for it is checked
on XP. To top it off, I can't even play ANY system sound including ones for
the Logon/Logoff; unless I run them through Windows Media Player manually...

There's nothing wrong with playing any sounds, it's just my functionality on
the system in these areas seem to have been blocked. I've even tried a
rollback on the drivers and a System Restore, but it still won't return
control to me. I don't know what has happened but it's obviously messed up
my system in places.

Any suggestions?

[please note I have an identical thread for this on the Dell Support Forums,
located here --

Instead of rolling back the drivers, try to reinstall them if you have
them on a CD somewhere. You can also download updated drivers from
the hardware manufacturer. The problem is most likely the drivers are
not being recognized or installed properly.
