System and Iexplore.exe use 100% of CPU

At random times my Windows XP Pro SP2 PC locks up when using Internet
Explorer. My PC is fully patched and is running Microsoft Antispyware.
No Spyware has been detected and this OS install is only about 1 month
old.

The problem only occurs when using IE 6. On random pages the PC will
lock up and when viewing Task Manager it shows the system process using
50% CPU and IE using 50% CPU.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

It could be one of the addons.
Open IE6 and choose tools/manage addons.
Disable the BHO's and see if it resolves the problem.
