Hi, Lynne.

I don't understand your whole problem, but I can explain a part of it.

Config.nt replaces the old config.sys file that we used to use with MS-DOS.
Config.sys, as you may recall, loaded certain drivers and made some very
low-level adjustments just as MS-DOS started to boot up. One of the drivers
that we had to load via config.sys was the CD-ROM device driver (mscdex.sys,
as I recall).

In WinXP, the only time we need config.nt is when we are opening a "DOS"
window and running programs from there. Config.nt and autoexec.nt are
installed by default in WinXP. They consist mostly of REMs explaining their
purpose and use, but they do also include a few executable lines, including
these lines in \%SystemRoot%\system32\autoexec.nt:

REM Install CD ROM extensions
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe

It seems to me that you should not need these two files to access CDs from
the Windows GUI, but you might need them to run programs on CDs from the
"DOS" window.

But, I'm mostly guessing.

Please post back and include the full error message that includes the line
you quoted. It might also help if you tell us the name of the program you
are trying to run; somebody here might recognize it and know just what you
need.
