have tried all other solutions to System 32 open folder at start up.
None fix or relate to what i see when i get to the end of each string in reg
edit.
I have only one erroneous entry in both that is
(Default ) REG SZ (value not set)
Tried to delete these in both Local and Current but will not allow.
Any further clues,anyone
Thanks Mark T.

Maybe a repair install.

Reinstall WindowsXP and keep all your current installed applications
and settings:
Put your XP cd in the drive.
If " D " is your CD rom drive.
D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste that command into the RUN box,
then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 ( about 500mb ) on your hard drive, you can replace D:
( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.
If you have SP2 installed, you will need it on the CD, this is done by
slipstreaming.
Universal Windows Slipstreaming and Bootable CD Guide
http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?action=show&showarticle=49
http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=284&p=2
A service pack is a product-specific collection of updates that fix
security, program compatibility and system reliability issues. It also
provides enhancements, administration tools, drivers and additional
components that have been developed since the product's release. In
short, a service pack helps to keep your product current and extends
its functionality.
This guide will describe the easiest way possible to slipstream (also
known as 'Integrate') a Service Pack into Windows 2000, XP or 2003. The
days of typing out command switches, and fiddling with boot sectors and
ISO settings in Nero are long gone, so none of that will be described
here! :-)
To do this, we will only need one program - MSFN's very own popular
nLite created by one of our members nuhi. While nLite is primarily
aimed to remove components to slim down a Windows CD, it has the
required tools to do just an automated Service Pack slipstream as well
as create a CD image.
http://www.nliteos.com/
Prerequisites:
A Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 CD
The latest "Network Install" Service Pack for one of the above
Operating Systems
Suitable CD Burning software capable of burning .ISO files (Nero,
Alcohol, Easy CD Creator, etc.)
nLite
Before we start, make sure you are doing this on an NT Operating System
(those are Windows 2000, XP or 2003) otherwise the slipstream will not
work. nLite also requires the .NET Framework to function.

This is really poor advice for this problem!!!!

Mark,

This one is the only likely candidate:
DataLayer c:\program files\common files\pcsuite\datalayer\datalayer.exe

The path has spaces and does not have quotes " at the beginning and end.
Normally this would open program or common folders, never the less.

Try this.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run

Export the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run key before making the change, just in case.

This will create a file called Run.reg on your Desktop.

Right click on the Run folder in the left hand pane and select: Export.
Click on Desktop on the left hand side of the Export Registry File dialog
that pops up.
Type: Run in the Filename box.
Click the Save button.

Ok, now to make the fix.

Double click on DataLayer in the right hand pane.
Add quotes " in the Value data box at the beginning and end of:

c:\program files\common files\pcsuite\datalayer\datalayer.exe

So it looks like:

"c:\program files\common files\pcsuite\datalayer\datalayer.exe"

Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

Reboot to see if the system 32 folder opens at boot.

If everything is fine, just delete the Run.reg file on your Desktop.

Thanks again Wes,
yes troubleshooter also told me about that one but never got round to doing
anything about it as it wasn't causing any probs. but I have followed your
advice nonetheless.
Still hasn't solved my problem but.
P.S When I do have problems and thats rare these days cos I generally do my
house work, but when I do they're generaally good ones.
I thought also of doing a restore, but I'm not sure of the exact date this
problem started to occur as I foolishly have been living with it for a while
now and may have other stuff I don't want to lose.
Any way I'll send you another post later on when I go searching for some

If you get this message...
[[This script cannot repair your issue. The expected Registry value was

Kelly's script looks for SB Audigy 2 Startup Menu value in
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
This is a real common problem with Dell machines that have an OEM
version of the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card. But it isn't the
only thing that causes the System32 folder to open at startup.

See this...

Post back with a startup log and someone will see if they can find the
startup entry thats's causing the system32 folder to open at boot.

Mark,

Try this. You may want to unplug your modem, you're gonna lose your
antivirus programs when you reboot.

Open the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe)...
Start | Run | Type: msconfig | Click OK |
Startup tab | Click the Disable All button | Click Apply |
Click OK | Reboot

After you have rebooted, if the System32 folder still appears, go back into
msconfig and click the Enable All button under the Startup tab. Beats me.
;-(

After you have rebooted, if the System32 folder does *NOT* appear, go back
into msconfig and check the top half of the startup items and reboot.

After you have rebooted again, if the System32 folder does *NOT* appear, go
back into msconfig and UNcheck the top half of the startup items, check the
bottom half of the startup items and reboot.

Keep adding or removing startup items and rebooting until you narrow down
the guilty startup item or discover that none of the startup items are
guilty.

Mark,

This one is the only likely candidate:
DataLayer c:\program files\common files\pcsuite\datalayer\datalayer.exe

The path has spaces and does not have quotes " at the beginning and
end. Normally this would open program or common folders, never the
less.

Try this.

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run

Export the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run key before making the change, just in case.

This will create a file called Run.reg on your Desktop.

Right click on the Run folder in the left hand pane and select: Export.
Click on Desktop on the left hand side of the Export Registry File
dialog that pops up.

Well, it beats me. Something is goofy. The MSINFO32 startup log did not
list everything that starts at boot. I beleive that it only lists what
msconfig handles.

Msconfig.exe can handle startups from these locations...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Load and Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

With Windows XP, There are 13+ places that programs can start from and
they are executed in the following order:

Before Logon
1)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

After Logon
3)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Setup
4) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
5) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
6) WIN.INI [Windows] Load
7) WIN.INI [Windows] Run
8) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
9) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
10) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
or %allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
11) C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
or %userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
12) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
13) As a Scheduled Task set to run at startup.

13+ places means that there are more locations where stuff can start from,
but check out the above locations for anything goofy looking.

System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086

Read the instructions at the top of the page.

System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot

If you get this message...
[[This script cannot repair your issue. The expected Registry value
was not found.]]

See this...
How to generate a startup log using MSINFO32
http://www.winxptutor.com/msinfo32.htm

Post back with a startup log and someone will see if they can find
the startup entry thats's causing the system32 folder to open at
boot.

In Mark T. <[email protected]> hunted and pecked:
have tried all other solutions to System 32 open folder at start
up. None fix or relate to what i see when i get to the end of each
string in reg edit.
I have only one erroneous entry in both that is
(Default ) REG SZ (value not set)
Tried to delete these in both Local and Current but will not
allow. Any further clues,anyone
Thanks Mark T.
