Sysprep not prompting for Computer Name

Hello,

Been having a strange problem with Sysprep on XP. When
running with a sysprep.ini file, the mini-setupo does not
prompt for a Computer Name. Here are the steps that were
followed:

- Prepared base image (left the machine in a workgroup)
- Ran Sysprep -factory
- Resealed and confgured sysprep.ini using setupmgr.exe

Not using any winbom.ini for factory, just mini-setup.

What's interesting is that if the installation is
interrupted and the mahcine rebooted, it appears to work
ok after the second try. Also, if the sysprep.ini is
modified using ERD commander or other tool, it seems to
work. Overall it is flaky, at best.

Do I need to run sysprep - factory even if I just want to
seal the mage for cloning? MAybe it is a problem where
the network card drivers need to be added while in
factory mode?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,

I use sysprep's GUI so I can't remember the command switches. I believe in the GUI, factory and reseal modes are exclusive(?). I think I always select "reseal", and choose the "use minisetup" and "don't reset activation" checkboxes. Also make sure that your sysprep.inf doesn't have a computer name entry, even if the computer name entry in the inf is an asterisk. Everything is in the ref.chm that comes with the duplication tools.

BTW - if you are installing XP SP1, get the newest sysprep tools from MS' downloads area to ensure compatibility.

Hope this helps...

- Steven
