Sys Freezes

DL

Vaio Laptop, WinXpHome + updates + bios/video updates
No screen saver, connected to mains pwr, Firewall + AV all current, on LAN
NOT a temp. prob.
No new apps, startups, for 6 months
was OK untill late Dec03, since then have experienced numerous sys freezes,
even when only on desktop, disconnected from LAN, with all task bar apps
unloaded.
I've tried rolling back on sys restore - there are only crit.updates - Event
logs/dumps show nothing.
It can freeze within 2 mins or after 30mins, on the last occassion I thought
I heard a 'click' before it froze.
I'm running out of ideas as to how to diagnose, any thoughts?

I did have the same problem.
I could work for 20 minutes - 60 minutes on
my Sony Vaio FX604. Installing new BIOS software
solved the random lockup for me. The information
was found on: http://www.myplc.com/sony/
Thanks to Brad!

I have been having exactly the same problem. I've got a vaoi pcgfx601. Freezes at random and havent changed any hardware or software for any conflicts to occur. Also my problem started late dec'03( weird coincidence probably ). Tried everything to fix it. Cant afford to pay some tech to go putting new parts in but dont see how a 2 yr old laptop with very little usage should need replacements so soon. No-one i've spoken to seems to know what is the problem. Could this be some stuupid virus that no one has found yet?

Ray,
What operating system and CPU are you using? I have recently developed a
similar problem and wondered if they are related. FYI, my system usually
locks up so completely that my only recourse to turn off the computer (i.e.
CTRL-ALT-DEL does not bring task manager to the top).
