Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6

When I am on the web, just about every time I click on a link I get the
message:

A runtime error has occurred. Do you wish to debut?
Line 1
Error: Syntax error

What's causing this and how can I stop it? It has been going on for two
months now and is driving me nuts!

would that it would do that ...

i've had this problem for weeks and weeks and it's never
changed just from checking or unchecking those boxes ...

i'd love to see how someone actually got it to stop.

Check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles & CWShredder
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run in this order:

1. CWShredder (fix all)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all)

3. Spybot (generally, fix all in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

I had the same errors. I was using Norton Antispam and even with pop up
blocking turned off...I would get the errors. I was also using Norton
Antivirus. When I uninstalled Norton Antispam..my browser returned to
normal..except for the MSN Video which no longer works and I can't find the
solution. Jo

hmmm ... i use NAV, but i'm not planning on every using
Norton Utilities and NAV again ... this latest version of
System Works (2004) has been nothing but problems since i
first installed it (and uninstalled, and reinstalled, and
uninstalled, and reinstalled, etc.).

so, i wouldn't be surprised if NAV or SysWrks are the
culprits ... not willing to spend too much time on it,
since the pop up is really just an annoyance ... i do have
to do my work, too! Not just troubleshoot Symantec's bad
program :-)

I run those regularly (except your Hijackware), and i
still periodically get the pop-ups.

unfortunately, i have too much else to do to spend time
tracking down Microsoft undocumented "features" ...

go figure.

1. You might want to refresh your scripting engine:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/nhp/default.asp?contentid=28001169
or

Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

Sometimes there's a corrupt file in the cache and one must go to Tools |
Internet Options and click Delete Files.

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

(WinXP users who have problems with 2a and 2b, see
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm)

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

4. See also

5a. IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing>Enable third-party browser
extensions (uncheck & reboot).

5b. Find the hijacker that caused 5a to be checked (or if none were checked,
check for hijackware anyway):
