Does anyone know of a straightforward way to synchronise files within my
document folder between computers on a home / work network without having to
copy the whole lot including the ones that are unchanged.

WinXP Pro has "Offline Files" -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307853/EN-US/
(Note that XP Home does not have this feature).

That said, I personally hate offline files & have had too many problems with
it. I use a third party utility called "Second Copy 2000" from
www.centered.com - it works well & I use it on all my clients' laptops.

I use a freeware program called synchronX. It compares the two folders and
copies files based on time/date.
