Sync My Documents on notebook with server

What's the best way to sync the "My Documents" folder on a user's notebook
with his home folder on the server?

Most of the notebook users at work store all their info in the "My
Documents" folder and I'd like that info to be backed up to the server.

hi buddy..

since u said u wanna sync ur files onto the server..
u can ask ur administrator of the server to enable offline files feature on
the server..
n u wil have to enable on notebook the support to use offline files feature
from the following location..

My Computer > Tools Menu > Folder OPtions > Offline Files

when u dock in ur notebook to workplace network.. the notebook wil sync wit
the server automatically.. all the changes u have made on ur notebook wil be
updated onto the server

hope this helps :)

Thanks Bhanu,

That's me! LoL.

I setup all that you asked me. It seems to sync all files into one folder on
the notebook, ie. "Offline Files". I can't see how to create a new file on
the notebook so that it is automatically sync-ed to the server!? I also
created a new folder on the server under the folder I set to "Make Available
Offline", but that subfolder didn't sync across. I had to manually make it
available offline and it then sync-ed its files to the notebook, but the
files on the notebook didn't appear in similar folders as they are on the
server- all I see is the Offline Files folder with two files in it
eventhough the two files are in seperate folders on the server.

Thanks

hi again..
lemme explain how the sync works..
wen u r setting up offline files on the server.. u have 2 checkboxes..
1.sync all offline files when logging on
2.sync all offline files when logging off

so by default the 2nd one is selected.. so wen u make any changes.. in both
folders one at server end n ur notebook.. they are syned wen u r logging
off..
n make sure u have given required shared permissions to the folder u have
created on ur notebook..

gimme a day time.. wil explain u indetail.. how it works n how to set it up
perfectly with permissions n stuff.. gotta move out now..

Hi Thief.

***The terms and names of menus or folders I use may not be spell properly
because I am translating from a french version and I don't have an english
version in front of me***

Here is a procedure that can help you. You move the target of "My Documents"
to the personnal folder of the user on the server. Click on property on the
"My Documents" folder and click on "move to...", then find the share of the
user on the server. All his files will be move to that folder on the server.
After this is done, you brouse the server and you set the folder to be
availlable offline. Then, every folder or documents that you will create
under your "My Documents" folder will automaticly be syncronyse in the next
syncronisation.

Thanks Frank.

Will this method still keep the user's files on his local "My Documents"
(notebook)? I ask this because when I setup Shared files, they end up in a
folder called Offline Files Folder. Then, the only way for the user to
access these files is via this special folder.

I want the user to access the files in his local "My Documents" when away
from the office and when he comes into the office, his local "My Documents"
syncs with the one on the server's share.

Hi again Thief.

Yes this will be transparent to the user. He will open his "My Documents"
folder and see his documents as usual. He will still be able to see them in
the offline file folder too, but personaly I don't find this folder usefull.
All documents are mix-up and there is no way to see them in the context of
the folder I chosed.

By the way, any folder that you decide to syncronyse will be available when
your are not connect to your network throu your favorite folders in your
Windows Explorer. Normaly you won't be able to brouse throu those folders
when your not connected, but because you activate the syncronisation, those
folder will be available like if you were connected to the network. But you
are working on the offline copy of the document. They will be syncronyse when
computer is configure to do so or when you manualy start the syncronisation.
