symbols is missing from the insert menu

Before I upgraded to XP I could insert trademarks and things like that in a
document by clicking on insert then selecting "symbols". Since upgrading to
XP symbols is no longer on the insert menu. I'm using Word 2000.

And in case you wonder how you lost the Symbol entry on the Insert menu,
dollars to doughnuts you did it by trying to insert a dash. The built-in
keyboard shortcuts for dashes include the "minus" key on the numeric keypad.
Many users overlook or fail to understand "Num" and use the hyphen key
instead. If you press Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen, you get the so-called "Terminator
Hyphen," which looks like a big minus sign. What this is used for is to
remove menu entries (such as defunct files from the Work menu or MRU list).
When Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen didn't insert a dash as expected, your next impulse is
to try Insert | Symbol. Surprise! You just deleted it! Luckily the
Terminator Hyphen is "used up" after one application (you can also turn it
off with ESC if this happens again).
