I'm tried to put a tick synbol in Excel but there's no option to put a symbol
in Excel. So I thought I would put one in a word document and copy it to
Excel (it used to work in the 2003 suite). No I can't find a displlay of
symbols or of Windings anywhere. Can anyone show me where they are?

Symbol is on the far right of the Insert tab. Click the arrow and choose
More Symbols to bring up the familiar dialog box.

The question is "Which version of Excel are you actually using?" -- 2008 (as
you wrote in the Subject of your post) is a Macintosh version. Excel 2007 is
the PC version & the same Symbol feature Suzanne referred you to is on the
same Insert tab of Excel's Ribbon.

If you are in fact using 2008 on a Mac the Symbols are in the Object Palette
of the Toolbox... Or you can use the OS X Character Map.
