A symbol that looks like like a music cleff appears in my document and a
period appears between each space. It's some kind of viewing feature that
does not print out like that. It shows up automatically and I cant figure out
how to get rid of it.

That's called a pilcrow ¶. You have your non-printing characters turned on.
If you are using Word 2003 or older, click on the icon on your toolbar with
that symbol. If you have Word 2007, click on the Office button in the upper
left corner, click on word Options, click Display, then in the area "Always
show these formatting marks on the screen", clear whatever is marked.

Or better yet, learn how to use those symbols:
What do all those funny marks, like the dots between the words in my
document, and the square bullets in the left margin, mean?

(Some of us can't work without them.)
