Of course not. It's a product from Symantec, not Microsoft.
cause I don't remember installing it

Did you look in Add/Remove Programs?
or is this the fax program with XP Pro.

Nope. It's a program you must purchase and install.

Wasnt a cut down version/part of Symantec Winfax available as an addon in
within OL2k, from the Office cd?
And if that was the case would an upgrade to OL2003 remove this feature?
Just asking, as I thought you would know.

Re-read the error message - it specifically states WinFax Pro, not Symantec Winfax Starter Edition (included in Outlook 2000).

It does. WinFax SE usually never got far enough along even to produce an
error message :(

Or it got far enough to only produce error messages, take your pick <g>

Those were in the successful installations.

I think there were 5 of those, weren't there? Not more than a dozen at most
though. Ah, those were the days...

I got the same error message, and I've NEVER installed winfax pro on this
machine. (I haven't used it for years, and have the program on 3.5" floppies,
and this machine has no such drive.)

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
Thanks

What is the exact error message you get? The original post was a reply from
either MS or Symantec about an error message not specified.

What version of Outlook are you using? Provide all the details you can so
people can answer your question properly.

That resolution message is something that's an MS error obviously. I was
testing some raw addin code a client sent me to debug for him and after
Outlook crashed I got the same resolution message in IE. It was obviously
wrong, this particular dev machine has never had any WinFax software on it
or any Symantec software on it for that matter.

So without knowing what crashed, how and what caused it and what else is
running in Outlook there's no way to know what's going on with the problems
that anyone is having other than that erroneous message in IE from MS.

How reassuring. For once we can't blame this one on Symantec. Interesting
bug.

I passed it along to Ed to get resolved, along with the fault bucket I got.
Maybe that will help PSS figure it out.

I told Ed if it wasn't affecting users who would get fooled by the
resolution I'd just leave it as is for the humor value <eg>

No idea about how long it will take to fix this. It's been reported and this
thread has been mentioned in the report, but I've been given no time frame
as to when it will be fixed or what has caused the problem.

I'm not aware of any printing problems with Outlook 2003 other than those
caused by using IE 7. That's another, different problem that has also been
reported to MS. I don't have any information as to any fixes for that
either.

K

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook]

They have as much information as we do, probably more. I also submitted the
original bucket number of the error in Outlook to them, so they also have a
trigger mechanism.

I have no idea when it will be fixed, if ever, and if we'll hear about it if
it is fixed. It's out of my hands now, anyway.

A PST file or Exchange mailbox contains your data and rules. So that won't
be lost by reinstalling.

What I'd do first however (in order) is:

1. Detect and Repair from the Outlook Help.
2. Disable all Outlook addins.
3. Run Scanpst.exe on your PST file when Outlook isn't running.
4. New Outlook profile.

If none of those things work then I'd think about uninstalling and
reinstalling. That usually is the least useful solution.

I'm dead in the water now. I was thinking of un-installing it and
re-installing it; would that help? I'm concerned about my data, all
the emails I've got in the inbox and such that I've held onto, and my
contact/address book info, not to mention the filters that I've set
up. I wanted to back them all up, but you have to be able to get
into the program to do a backup.

You do not have to open Outlook to back it up. In fact, you must have
Outlook closed to back it up. Use Windows Explorer to make a copy of your
PST. That's all it takes. There are a few other files that contain data,
like the autocompletion cache, but that can always be rebuilt. Save it if
you wish and you can restore it if needed.

Uninstalling and reinstalling should have no effect on your data. In fact,
it shouldn't have any effect on your mail profile, so if you do decide to
uninstall and reinstall, you should consider a new mail profile as well to
clean out the registry structures of the old one. Keep the old one until
you've configured and tested the new mail profile and it it works to your
satisfaction, you can then delete the old one. If you saved the
autocompletion data, it is here that you can restore it so that the new mail
profile can use it.

If Outlook isn't running you can just find and copy your PST file, it's in
the file system and can be copied like any other file.

Open the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs. Select Office and click the
Change button. In that dialog is a repair option.

You can open the registry editor and expand
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins. Every addin
listed there has a LoadBehavior value. Note the original setting and change
them all to 2. Repeat with the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section of the registry.
That will disable all your COM addins.

A new profile can be created in the Mail applet in the Control Panel. Make
sure to create a new one from scratch, don't use a copy because that would
have any corruption from the original profile.

Another possibility is if you have any corrupted views making mischief. Open
Start, Run and type "Outlook.exe /cleanviews" (no quotes but with the space
before the switch) then press Enter to start Outlook. That will delete any
custom views.

I downloaded the backup tool from Microsoft.

What does that have to do with what I said? All that tool does is perform a
copy, so just do the copy yourself with Windows Explorer.
