symantec antivirus auto-protect is disabled

S

Stan Brown

I have Symantec Antivirus Full Version 9.0.0.338 running on Windows
XP with P2.

Periodically (a couple of times a day) a rectangular window slides
up the bottom of my screen, in the bottom right corner, with
"symantec antivirus auto-protect is disabled". But when I open SAV
and view the statistics the background scan is going on right then.
So as far as I can tell this message is spurious.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern to when it pops up. I can be
playing a DOS game and not connected to the Net, or I can have my
broadband plugged in and be reading e-mail, or really anything.

How can I make this stop? It's really annoying, particularly when
it steals focus from a game.

(I've checked Symantec's site and Googled both the Web and the
newsgroups, but found zilch.)

Similar thing with mine some time ago - NAV disabled, turned out to be
a NAV 2005 issue with Creative Audigy Soundcards

Had to dig long and hard to find anything referring to the problem in
Symantecs' Knowlege Base. When I did the fixes were useless.

Yours will be something similarly obscure and totally unbelievable.

Ditch Norton.

I only wish I could. My college requires it as a condition of
connecting to the network.

Sorry Stan been away for a week.

Try using Norton 2003 to get your college network access, its OK and
it don't have issues but it is not as good as modern stuff although it
is light years better than 2005. Run an online Scanner (Panda or
something similar will do) regularly to make sure you are virus free
and get a few good antispyware apps.

If you want Norton 2003 let me know.
