What is the function of sychost.exe?

My Norton internet security program often asks my permission to allow it to
access the internet and advises that I permit it to do so. Under Task
Manager Processes there many instances where it is listed and it bothers me
that I don't know what it's purpose is. Will I in any way suffer if I deny
web access to this program?
