SXGA TFT monitor will work with old card?

Hi

please excuse my terrible hardware-ignorance - I haven't had any £ to
spend on hardware since 1997! So I just program these things at work
but haven't had a PC of my own since then.

I'm thinking of getting a flat-screen TFT monitor for the 2nd-hand PC
I've been given. The monitor calls itself SXGA, and has a standard
15pin Dsub connector.

Can I just plug this into my machine's SVGA card? Or is there
something special about TFT monitors that I don't know about, having
not kept up with hardware developments? I know that my SVGA card is
capable of 1024xwhatever it is, and I'd be happy with that resolution
if the card can't do 1280xwhatever it is (which seems to be what SXGA
means) - as long as SXGA means the monitor _can_ do up to 1280, rather
than _insisting_ on 1280.

thanks for any advice

Just about any monitor available today will work at formats from VGA
to whatever the native one of the panel is (usually advertized). Go for it!
