in XP i run without a swap file, and it works fine.
in vista it doesn't work well... i keep getting out of memory errors, and
eventually all my ram is used (1 GB). i enable the swap files and things go
much more smoothly.

interesting

You're lucky it works in XP without a swap file. Normally XP will complain
and create one anyway. XP's design works around having a page file, even if
it's no actually being used. No matter how much memory is installed you
should still have a page file. I would expect Vista to be the same.
