svchost

Running XP Pro SP2 and all updates.

Recently I have been getting more and more error messages regarding this
process.

Can I extract this file from I386 folder and replace the one currently
within %windir%\system32?

There probably is nothing wrong with the file. Instead, why don't you post
the error messages verbatim and advise what was being done on the computer
when the notices appeared.

Ok
Sometimes I get the message that IE or OE needs to close because of a
problem with svchost.exe (and the choice to send an error report to MS). I
do not get any help from the MS report. Except for MS updates I have not
added any new programs and the only hardware change has been to a stick of
memory. I will try and capture the actual details of the error report and
post back.

Further - seems to happen more often when using IE (I am using IE Version
7.0.5730.11).

Examples from the Event Viewer:

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module
rpcss.dll, version 5.1.2600.2726, fault address 0x0001f4f9
Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module
rpcss.dll, version 5.1.2600.2726, fault address 0x0001f4f9.

There seems to be also a number of these error reports:

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16674, faulting module
ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00010f29.

Does this help?

Quite often it is malware or a Trojan/virus "hiding" behind svchost that is
causing problems. Have you recently run a complete scan with an up-to-date
anti virus program and a malware program such as SpyBot S&D? If not, I'd
start there. If the machine is clean, you might want to post to an IE
newsgroup since the problem seems centered around IE. You could try
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general.

Yes Ron, I have done the malware, trojan, virus scans and apart from a
suspect browser hijacking attempt, all was clean. But I will do it all again
and this time in Safe Mode with system restore turned off. And I will take
up your suggestion of posting in an IE newsgroup.
Any comments on others suggestions to "fix" my problem?
Thanks for your help.
