I am looking at the memory usage of my system and see
that svchost.exe is listed (7) times, all active as a
running process, can this list be cut to improve
performance?

No. The svchost.exe is the "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services". This
program allows the critical services to run on the system.

No. SVCHost is merely a service program, used to load and provide
communication to a whole slew of services on behalf of the system. They
get loaded in batches at different stages, hence the multiple instances.
- things like third party fiirewalls and resident AV often have a
service loaded just for them, giving extra instances.

All you can do is turn off selected services that are not needed by
you; but it will make little difference to performance apart from a
modest memory use. Here all the instances of svchost put together show
only 2 mins CPU in the past 24 hours. Unless some malware has tried
getting in on the act, in which case one instance will probably show a
noticeable CPU use and probably steadily increasing memory use. If you
see that run up to date anti-spyware programs.
