SVCHOST.EXE

SVCHOST.EXE is the bane of my existance. I'm running XP
pro, and i have no idea why (hence why im posting here),
but scvhost.exe seriously degrades my comps performance.
It'll use all remainding processing power (so cpu usage
is 100%) no matter what else is running, i can have no
other background prog's running and it will use the
remainder of the cpu's power... it's doesn't do it all
the time, only like 90% of the time... as you can
imagine, rather annoying.

Anyone have any suggestions? Please e-mail me if you have
a solution...

Only a suggestion, but in my wife's computer, which runs W2000 (not XP, I
know), the network adaptor driver was causing the same problem. I eventually
changed the network adaptor for a different make, and that solved the
problem.

It's perfectly normal to have several instances of Svchost.exe
running:

However, it can be "high-jacked" by worms:

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
installed the KB824146 Hotfix, without having first installed an
antivirus application with current virus definition files, and before
enabling a firewall, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.
