the task manager

What are they, and what do they do

They are services. e.g. C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs; and
are run at startup.

Found by Computer Management/Services (Right-click "My Computer" /
Manage is one way to locate them; or Programs / Administrative Tools /
Services, but that might not be configured).
