svchost.exe

Has anyone else had this?

We have W2000 running on Dell Optiplex machines. This
morning, all of them are getting svchost.exe errors on
startup. This si the first time they have been used since
last year! I cannot find out why or if there is a fix.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

The following is the solution I found and it seems to work for me so far...

=>First of all this is due to a worm, which Norton does not detect (or did
not, I'm not sure if they have an upgrade to that).

=>You can find more info on this at
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html

=>You will also find information on this on Microsoft Security Bulletin
MS03-026 which is at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/
bulletin/MS03-026.asp

=>Near the bottom of the Microsoft Security Bulletin page there are links to
download locations for the patch which fixes the problem You can download
this and install it. If I remember right, to install this patch you need
Service Pack 2 or above. So, in case you don't have SP2, you will have
download that (I downloaded SP4). However the one thing the worm can do is
to make it so Internet Explorer can't go to this page! I downloaded it
using Opera.

=>Once you have the patch you could download an anti-virus from
http://www.free-av.com This will detect the virus.

Note: For some users they have had to download all critical updates from
Windows before getting rid of the SVCHOST error (No idea why!). However for
me taking the above update has solved the problem.

Hope this helps.
