I want to now what svchost.exe is. My problem is that if i
am on the internet a message pops up after 2 minutes
telling me that svchost.exe has spotted some "trouble" and
it will shut down and that i must reopen in windows. After
clicking ok i can still be on the internet but i cant log
in anywhere (eg i can only go to a homepage, but cant go
any further)

Please help (I am no computer fundi)

It's a normal function of Win2K and WinXP but, it is also a major target of infectors.

Please go to McAfee (http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp) and/or Trend
(http://housecall.antivirus.com ) and perform an online scan of your platform then report
back your results.

Your machine is infected with a virus. Check existing posts
for svchost.exe in the Subject line - there are lots and lots
of them!

Follow the earlier recommendations about the AV stuff, but a basic answer to
your question is that svchost manages services on the machine.

Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
installed the KB824146 Hotfix, without having first installed an
antivirus application with current virus definition files, and before
enabling a firewall, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.
