I've reformatted and installed Windows XP SP2 (SP2 pre-integrated into
Windows XP from our MSDN universal subscription).

Occassionally, an instance of svchost.exe starts using a lot of CPU (90%+).
In addition, it has 800+ open handles. When this instance of svchost.exe
acts like this, it is impossible to start and use another application - not
even Task Manager.

My current workaround is to start Task Manager asap after rebooting and
logging in so that I can kill the rogue instance of svchost.exe.

Any ideas why svchost.exe runs like this under SP2?

What is the fix?

Hi Michael Herman,

I can answer this as it happened to me, just the other day.

You need to open Services in Administrative Tools located in the Control
Panel.

Once Services is open scroll down until you see SSDP Discovery Service.
Double-click it to open it for its Properties. Change the Startup Type to
Manual. Click Apply then OK. On my system, it was Disabled.
