SVCHOST.EXE process is causing slowdown

R

Richard Stewart

For several weeks now I have been living with the problem of slow browsing
to folders (40 seconds for drop down box to show) with any of the SaveAs,
Open, or Look In dialog boxes. Also MSPAINT takes about 40 seconds to open
up. All updates have been added , spyware removed, and viruses are not
detected. I've tried the fix I got from this group (
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=321126 ), but it didn't work
for me.

I tried stopping a number of processes using the "Windows Task Manager"
window and found out that if I stop all the instances (about 5 of them) of
the "SVCHOST.EXE" process, the problem is solved, but only for a minute.
When I stop this process for the system, the system starts to shut down
because a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) was terminated unexpectantly.

I have a feeling that there is something I could do by editing the Registry.
Any ideas?

TIA

Richard

Hi,

You have a virus, or more likely several of them. Update your av software,
then restart in safe mode and run a full system scan.
