svchost.exe & LSASS.exe

S

Spunky

These two files are frequently occupying 55-90% of my CPU,
bringing my system to a virtual halt. "END PROCESS" is
denied, and the eventual cure is to re-boot. What is the
purpose of these files? What is this telling me?

Confused and frustrated in Texas.

svchost is an application that hosts services. Many different services run
as part of Windows. The proper way to reset a runaway service is to find
out which one it is and restart it (with 'net stop', 'net start', or the mmc
services snapin).

LSASS is the Local Security Authority-- terminating this process will cause
your computer to reboot because Windows can't function without it.

Can you tell us more about your system? Is your computer a Domain
Controller, by any chance?
