svchost crash

Tom

I would appreciate any advice any of you may have.

I am running xp pro and just today, randomly, without any cause
svchost has started crashing when I connect to the internet. After
the crash, it gives me a minute before xp reboots itself. I was
running xp pro with sp1. when this problem showed up I was so
annoyed, I formatted and reinstalled. I haven't installed the service
pack yet and it's still doing it.

I haven't installed any new programs in the past few days so I don't
know what is causing this problem or how to fix it.

Please help.

Thanks.
Tom.

I started experiencing this yesterday also and after doing everything
from reinstalling to blowing my brains out I finally found the answer.

You are infected with the new Blaster Worm

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html

Easiest way to see if you have it is to search on your C: drive for a
file called MSBLAST.EXE.

I initially renamed this to msblast.exe.001 then rebooted.
Everything back to normal. To protect yourself update virus table and
run all critical updates from micrososft.
