Is anyone here running SuSe 9.1 on an XP or XP Pro computer? Any problems
or bugs? I'd like to install it on my primary hard drive but am a little
hesitant to do so. I have an external 120gb HDD that'll work but I like to
keep it as a mirror of my pc's hd.

You either run it, or you don't. Having Win XP on the computer has nothing
to do with the other operating system as long as they are separated. What
"exactly" is your question? Do you want to run it on TOP of Windows XP? No
way.

Now, you can buy VirtualPC and run it that way!

Hi,

It's an entirely different Operating System, and installing and running it
on your system should have no effect on WinXP. As long as you have free
space on the drive and the knowledge to install it, it's fairly easy to do.

Thanks to both of you. I wasn't very clear in my question. I wanted to
make sure that the partitioning and installation of SuSe on the same hard
drive where there's an XP partition wouldn't cause any boot conflicts.

I dual boot this laptop with XP Pro and SuSE 9.1. What is your question?
You can Google for "dual boot XP + Linux" for lots of sites if you need
help. Or read the manual that comes with SuSE. Very simply, you will
need to partition your hard drive - Partition Magic 8 is very good for
this.

Hi,

Shouldn't be any conficts, though you will need to use the linux bootloader
(the winxp one can't boot a linux system).

I just learned how to do this with Mandrake 9.2 and winXP. Make sure that
WinXP (if you are planning on having a NTFS file system) is on the primary
or first partition and use a linux boot loader (I used LILO). NTFS cannot
boot from an extended partition. Load WinXP first, then install your flavor
of linux. Linux will find it and offer the option of dual booting. Good
Luck.

Thank you! I hadn't though about LILO. WinXP is on the NTFS primary
partition (only partition right now). This'll be my first try with Linux
and while I could run SuSe from the cd they offer as a trial, all the
features wouldn't be there so, I'd rather just install the complete version

You'll enjoy the newest (Linux) Suse distro, I toyed with it for a while. I
really like Mandrake's newest version, and am thinking about getting it.

Excellent. Let us know how it is. I built another machine for Mandrake
9.2, and once I had it up and going, I was pretty happy myself with it.
Since I'm just learning with linux, and I have 2 machines up and
successfully running it, I would like to leave it be for now and get more
comfortable with it before upgrading to the latest distro. Have fun.

The newer distros of Suse are excellent, and they are rock solid. Mandrake
would be my choice, since I know how it works more, I haven't used it since
the last 8.0 version. Although I like Linux, I simply cannot stand having to
use command lines to install the hardware, etc. Though I know how, I
wouldn't recommend it for the novice though.

I will try the newer Mandrake, to see what apps they support. Since I do a
good deal of office work, there still isn't anything that compares to MS
Office 2003 (or OfficeXP), this includes anything Corel makes (though I
sometimes still use the Word Perfect Suite 11 from time to time), and Open
Office leaves little to be desired.

Also, all the other OSes other than Windows still don't get much software of
good quality written to be used for them, though hardware makers are coming
a long way. My current system will work with any of the newer Linux distros.
