Sun Java vs Ms VM

Thank you for your reply. I did try several of the things from your post
already
AND/ OR have downloaded files to work on redoing my java to the old one as
suggested below.

And I realize all that is written about the demise of the OLD JAVA under the
Microsoft/Sun suit and agreement. I THINK IT SUCKS!! I think Microsoft and
SUN
are both going down the tubes if these they continue in the path they have
chosen.

I also think that there are only so many ways to do certain functions on a
computer, and
when I company finds a better way and reproduces this process but some
functions are
very similar to another, they should be allowed to use that "look alike"
function/ setup
regardless. Perfect examples are MS WORD and WORD PERFECT/COREL - as they
used to
look exactly the same when changes were made to improve but because one
looked like that
before the other, the OTHER was forced to change something good to something
bad. '
Does that make sense? NO! Same held true with many of the aspects of
NETSCAPE to EXPLORER.
ie bookmarks and favorites and how you organize them or find info in them.
Same thing happened here, too, when lawsuits were settled. To me, this is
ridiculous - cause like
I said.. there is only so many ways you can really do a certain process,
and it is not really copying to
use a function a certain way and ONLY That way, when it is the way it should
be.

But back to my original problem - any detailed helped on how to remedy my
current situation
OR any known conflicts with what is on my system (programs or specs), would
be greatlly appreciated.

Hi Ssea - Do each step, exactly - don't omit any.

1. First, disable ALL Norton/Symantec stuff of any kindand keep it disabled
until this process is totally completed.

2a. Now go to Add-Remove Programs and uninstall ALL Sun Java packages -
reboot after each uninstall.

2b. Now go to Start|Run and enter RunDll32
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall exactly as shown.

Courtesy of http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/java.php "You will then
be asked if you really want to remove the virtual machine and then reboot.
At this point if a message is displayed to the effect of 'removing the jvm
will prevent you being able to download files' this refers to files
downloaded through java applets rather than regular file downloads. Although
the VM has now been removed it has not removed all remnants of the VM's
existence from your machine, if you wish you can remove the following
without adverse effect.

Registry Keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM (Key used for VM entry in IE Advanced
Options)"

(INSERTED BY JIM BYRD: Unless you're comfortable working with the Registry,
leave the Registry entries above alone!!!! If you do delete them, back up
your Registry first!!!)

"System Folders and Files
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jview.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wjview.exe
C:\WINDOWS\inf\java.pnf
C:\WINDOWS\java
(C:\Windows represents the drive and path of your windows install,
%windir%)"

3. Download Sun Java 5.0, here:
http://dlc.sun.com/jdk/jre-1_5_0_01-windows-i586-p.exe

4. Logon as an Administrator.

5. Close down as many of your startup programs as you can.

6. Install the package you downloaded by double clicking on it and
following directions.

7. Reboot.

8. Now test whether Java is working on your machine at the following sites:

http://www.pocoso.de/pocoso052.html
http://www.clan.lib.ri.us/clan/javatest.html (This one may be down)
http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp (both 1.0 and 1.1 and what's installed)
http://coglab.wadsworth.com/support/browsercheck.html
http://www.ces.clemson.edu/webct/browser_detect.html

9. Post back here with your results, please.

10. Re-enable your Norton/Symantec stuff (if you must - I would advise
uninstalling and replacing it, however - non-commercial Norton/Symantec
stuff is notorious for interfering with other software.)

Very interesting. Thanks for all the information. I appreciate it.

: Your post is kinda old but what I am looking for. Has anything that you
know
: of changed on this situation?
:
: I want to know what is the best way to REINSTALL MS JAVA onto my WIN XP
: system! Please help. My SUN JAVA is of the latest version and supposedly
: installed properly - according to the SUN site. BUT it continually hangs,
: locks up, and is super slow in java sites. Eventually (never fails) it
will
: lock you up where your only option to shut that window down is to go to the
: TASK MGR and END the program. With this action it will take all java sites
: down. Also, in TASK MGR it never says these applications are NOT
RESPONDING,
: as you would expect, but when you end them the error you get is "hanging
: application".
