SUMIF with a conditional reference

I am trying to make an Excel formula =SUMIF(a2:c2, a1,
a2:c2) works using the A1 reference. I was trying a
conditional reference like =SUMIF(a2:c2, >=a1, a2;c2) I
get an error, I tried quotes and such and still get an
error. this formula works with a numerical criteria but it
needs to be dynamic. Am I entering the syntax wrong? Or is
this method not possible?
