sum of entries IN A QUERY

In the query design, I want to total the amount of entries in a field.

Using the total feature does not work, because the entries are not numbers.

Any suggestions on creating an expression?

What do you mean exactly with "entries in a field"?

What do you want to "total" if they are not numbers? What is the "total" of
"Fred", "Mark", "Janet" and "Jim"?

Please explain what data you have and what result you want.

total of the entries

Total of Salmonella

Please post an example of the data and the desired total.

Remember - *we cannot see your database*. You say the field is not numeric;
what IS it then? Does the field contain the text string "Salmonella"? Does it
contain some other text? Does it contain a number after all?

Clear your mind of any preconceptions and knowledge of how your database is
structured, and read it as if you were one of the volunteers here who have
never seen it. Reread your posts. Would YOU be able to provide an answer?
