Sum Calculations

Hello all,

The situation is:

1. Data is in sixteen cells, A1-A16;
2. In cell A17, I have =SUM(A1:A8);
3. In cell A18, I have =SUM(A9:A16).

If I enter a value of, for example, 1 in cells A1-A16,
however, A17 automatically switches to calculating all 16
cells, wheras A18 calculates only A9-A16 values.

How do I enable cell A17 to calculate only the sum of
cells A1-A8 and not change to summing the values of cells
A1-A16?

Found my own answer:

Tools-->Options-->Edit-->remove the check mark from
"Extend List Formats and Formulas".
