Suggestions for Wireless Connection

All,

Building PC for son's use. Config as follows:

GigaByte GA-K8NS
Athlon 64 2800+
512 MB Ram DDR400
ATI Radeon 9800 (128MB)
WD800JB
Lite-On LTC-48161H (DVD/CDRW)
Antec 3700 AMB
Win XP Home

We have a LinkSys Wireless router connected to a cable modem for
broadband access. Would like set up son's PC for wireless connection.
What hardware would be recommended?

Would the best route be a card or something that plugged into the
existing ethernet connection in the I/O plate?

There is no 'card' that plugs into the existing ethernet port. You have
a choice of adding a PCI card or adding a USB device. You also don't say
which type of wireless your router supports: a, b, g, or super g. Those
details are sorta necessary if you want things to work.

Cheers,

Ari, the LinkSys model is BEFW11S4 with a label that says 802.11b.
Does that help?

Yes it does. You can use all but wireless 802.11a cards or usb adapters
on your other computer to access the router (802.11b/b+/g/g+). You're
restricted to wireless b speeds though, regardless of the cards or usb
adapters capable speeds. For example, if you buy a g+ card (108mbps)
you'll still only be able to use this card at b speed (11mbps), because
this is all that the router can handle. This is a fairly slow type of
wireless router. However, cards for wireless b are fairly cheap now. I'd
recommend going with the same brand as the router. You're less likely to
have issues according to those who've been around since wireless
networking came along (I've only moved there recently, but have already
had a problem trying to mix adapters on a network...but that was
probably more likely due to buying a cheapo usb adapter). I'd suggest
buying one of these inexpensive Linksys models:

Linksys WMP11 802.11B PCI Card

Linksys WUSB11 802.11B USB ADAPTER

If you want faster speeds for file transfers on the network, then you'll
need to upgrade the router. I can give a few suggestions for that, too.

Cheers,

Ari
